The main driving idea behind the Home In The Heavens is to accumulate assets that can be liquidated to support the jump start of the first extra-terrestrial habitation that is completely self sufficient and self governing. It is aimed at extending the habitability of places for human life to places outside the confines of this planet, making it possible for the number of people to approach that of the stars in the sky, grains of sand on the beach, or particles of dust in the world. In other words, beyond our ability to effectively count. This also is intended to relieve pressures on our environment by reducing the number of people who live here, without resorting to war, or pestilence, or famine to make this happen.
The driving idea was inspired by the Ansari X PRIZE, where $10 Million was awarded back on October 4, 2004 for the first commercial (non-governmental) launch of a spacecraft capable of carrying three people to 100 kilometers above the earth's surface, twice within two weeks. Oh, you hadn't heard about this, I guess. It's not science fiction. It's real!
And so is this:
The Race to Build a Real Star Trek Tricorder
Whoa! Is that a rush or what?
It has been speculated that if one of the richest persons on this world liquidated their entire net worth, it would be enough to fund the development of a self sufficient colony (living under domes) on Mars! Back in the 1970's, some very forward thinking people thought that we had the technology and ability financially to develop a colony on the Moon, and with materials mined by that colony, build entirely self sufficient habitats between the Moon and the Earth that could have supported a significant portion of the World's Population. And that was using technology from about 40 years ago! Think about it. How big was a cell phone back then? How much did one cost, even in 1970's dollars and not adjusted for inflation?
We are prejudiced with our experiences and are too afraid to dream. But people dream about winning the Lotto all the time. Is that really reasonable in comparison? Or becoming someone important in history. Maybe that is the key!
If the 5 richest people thought that by utilizing 20% of their net worth that they could insure their place in history, (long term, not just until the circus of the next election cycle) how tempting do you think this might be? Add a big enough carrot that ensured that getting over the hump would push it from marginal success to absolute success, and wouldn't the temptation to dare such a thing get greater?
Me, I don't have the means at all. I have vision. That seems to be what everyone else is lacking. I am not trying to brag, it just seems to me that what I see should be so obvious to everyone.
But it is not. So this idea was born.
Actually, I have to admit that this idea was born way back before the current economic crisis that is still smacking the world economy around. I posted it here back on January 1st, 2006. Once you understand what this could have done, (had it been in place) before the current crisis to relieve some of the pressure and offer hope, I am certain some of you are going to feel like screaming at me:
"Why didn't you do this way back then, you idiot!?!"
The short answer: I wasn't ready.
And although I am truly sorry for my shortcomings, you were not ready either! I think we had to go through this first.
